UMC Disaffiliation Coaching

“Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference between right and almost right.”

-Charles Spurgeon
Churches across our connection find themselves in a period of discernment. People are scrambling to understand the situation that has divided The United Methodist Church and what choices are available. We are constantly contacted by laity and clergy alike asking for representatives to speak to their church because they want to discern with correct information about Global Methodism. We receive calls from church leaders who do not understand what they are supposed to do for their church or where to look for help when it comes to the discernment and disaffiliation process.

My name is Michael Cyr and I would like to introduce myself as the lead disaffiliation coach for the Mid-Tex Conference of the Global Methodist Church. We have a team of trained lay and clergy that are available to walk alongside your church for the duration of the process:

  • We give information to share with your church and share pointers on where to start your own research
  • We explain and provide next steps for your UMC disaffiliation process—whether you are in the Central, North, or Rio Texas Conference
  • We are a quiet and prayerful presence during your church votes
  • We check on you and keep in contact until the final vote at your Annual Conference is taken
  • We give you what you need to believe in and align with the Global Methodist Church
  • We show grace and mercy, love and compassion
  • We work as a team so you are never alone when schedules get crowded
  • We make presentations and participate in town hall meetings

We are your partners in the discernment process as we walk beside you and pray with you for every step. We do it as fellow Christians who know that discernment is difficult, with a careful eye on the fact that each church context is unique.

Ask us your questions. Let us walk with and pray for you. Feel free to reach out for your own disaffiliation coach. No matter where you are in this process, we are available and will continue to be available—even if your discernment leads you down a different path. We are here to help.

What People are Saying:

“I would like to take this opportunity to say how much we appreciate the tremendous support from all the coaches of GMC in our journey to disaffiliate from UMC. This process would have been much more difficult without the support and expert advice given. Toward the end of this transition we have received advice in the selection process for clergy assignments, which have answered many of our questions. We had the additional challenge of a non-supportive pastor. So, the advice and help of all members of the GMC transition team, helped immeasurably. Saying thank you seems a little inadequate. But THANK YOU all the same.” - Jim C.
